Farview Farms Meat Company’s smoked breakfast sausage link with potatoes, cheese and bacon was winner of the Most Innovative Pork Product at the 2019 Kansas Meat Processors Association Meat Product Show earlier this month.
The $250 award is sponsored by the Kansas Pork Association and is given based on qualities such as appearance, texture, color, aroma, flavor and commercial potential of the products.
“The convenience craze had us looking for a way to include all of those breakfast items in one product,” said Drew Forster, owner of Farview Farms Meat Co., Topeka. “We felt the sausage link (bratwurst size) would be the best form. It can be sliced and mixed with eggs, or served as is with toast and eggs, etc.”
Forster has been involved in the meat business since 1995 when he started working as a clean-up boy at Valley Vista Locker. He went on to be assistant manager at the Kansas State University Meat Lab while earning an animal science degree. After graduating in the spring of 2001 from KSU, Forster bought the old Valley Vista Locker and began business as Farview Farms Meat Company that fall.
“I love creating different sausages and jerky items that people like to eat and will come back for time after time,” Forster said. “I love the creative process of coming up with something unique that people will try and then seeing them come back to get more because they loved it. I tell people that if I won the lottery I would keep working every day just to make sausage and then donate the product to the needy.”
Forster’s business has been a KMPA member since 2001, and he served as board president in 2015-2016.
“I appreciate the support the Kansas Pork Association gives KMPA,” Forster said.
