On the heels of an announcement stating a Wichita business was planning to expand, Wichita mayor Jeff Longwell jokingly asks citizens to buy more bacon.
Hormel Food plans to bring about 350 jobs to Wichita over the next five years with a 156,000 square-foot expansion to its existing campus, Mayor Jeff Longwell told kten.com last week. At a cost of about $132 million, Wichita community leaders are excited about the economic benefits.
“We’re going to require that every household buys bacon weekly now. Who doesn’t like that?” Mayor Longwell told reporters.
According to the news source, the jobs are part of an expansion at the Dold Foods manufacturing plant. Dold Foods joined the Hormel Foods family in 1984, said an article from KSN.com. The company produces a variety of retail bacon and food service layout bacon items and are a large contributor to the overall bacon production for Hormel Foods, according to the Dold Foods website.
The company currently employs 275 workers. After the expansion, the workforce will more than double to at least 650 employees, the company said.
The Wichita City Council will vote on the expansion on Tuesday.
